MoonPay Introduces PayBox, Enabling ChatGPT and Claude to Complete Digital Transactions

MoonPay has unveiled PayBox, a payment vault designed specifically for AI agents. Announced recently this month, this new tool allows users of popular AI platforms such as OpenAI‘s ChatGPT and Anthropic‘s Claude to execute payments, trades, and other transactions directly within conversations, without compromising security or control over their funds.

PayBox functions as a non-custodial vault that bridges AI interactions with real-world financial operations.

Users connect the service once through a custom connector in their chosen AI interface. From there, they can issue natural language commands—like requesting to convert fiat to stablecoins, exchange tokens, transfer assets across networks, engage with decentralized finance protocols, or even handle practical tasks such as reserving a table at a restaurant or booking travel.

The AI analyzes the request, prepares the necessary transaction details, and then seeks user confirmation before proceeding.

A core feature of PayBox is its emphasis on user sovereignty.

Funds never leave the user’s control, as the system avoids traditional custody arrangements.

Transactions require approval via a passkey in the default “Always Ask” mode. For more hands-off operation, users can enable “Autonomous” mode, setting personalized spending limits and rules.

Any modifications to these permissions demand fresh passkey authorization.

Each approval is narrowly scoped to a single action and expires immediately after use, minimizing risks from replay attacks or unauthorized expansions.

Security underpins the entire architecture.

Crypto wallet keys employ multi-party computation (MPC) split across secure hardware enclaves, ensuring that neither MoonPay, the AI agent, nor any single point of failure can independently authorize movements.

Payment cards integrate via protocols like Visa’s agentic commerce, preventing the AI from accessing raw details.

This setup draws on technology from Sodot, a firm MoonPay acquired earlier, which already safeguards billions in assets.

The vault supports a growing range of blockchains at launch, including Solana and various EVM-compatible networks such as Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, Hyperliquid, Tempo, and Robinhood Chain.

For interactions beyond crypto, PayBox leverages the x402 open standard for agent payments.

This allows seamless transactions with compatible services for shopping, reservations, and more, expanding the potential for AI-driven commerce across the internet.

Early integrations cover major retailers, travel platforms, and dining services, with additional capabilities expected to roll out regularly.

MoonPay’s CEO and founder, Ivan Soto-Wright, highlighted the innovation’s broader implications: this marks a shift where money integrates fluidly into conversational AI, much like how cards once concealed cash and phones hid cards.

As AI agents proliferate, PayBox aims to provide the essential trust infrastructure for safe economic participation.

Setup is straightforward and takes just minutes.

Users access PayBox at its dedicated site, link it to their AI tool, register a passkey, and add wallets or cards—funding options include direct transfers or MoonPay’s verified ramps.

The product positions itself as a flexible solution for the emerging era of agentic AI, avoiding the need for complex developer integrations or risky handoffs.

This launch underscores MoonPay’s ongoing push into AI-enhanced finance, following prior initiatives.

By combining convenience with safeguards, PayBox could accelerate adoption of AI for personal and commercial transactions, potentially reshaping how users interact with money in daily digital life. As support expands to more AI models and deeper DeFi functionalities, it signals a maturing ecosystem where conversational prompts translate directly into actionable economic outcomes.
