SEC Boosts Enforcement Division With New Financial Reporting Unit

The Securities and Exchange Commission has added a new Financial Reporting and Accounting Unit to its Division of Enforcement that is described as working across the agency to make certain all divisions are aligned in enforcing securities laws and the SEC’s goals.

Accounting and forensic investigations is one of the most challenging aspects of securities enforcement.

Effectively, the SEC is seeking to centralize expertise to more effectively investigate and pursue intentional misconduct and other violations.

David Woodcock, Director of the SEC’s Division of Enforcement, said builds upon the Enforcement Division’s mission of pursuing fraud, including accounting and reporting transgressions.

The SEC said that the unit will be led by Timothy Zimmerman, who joined the SEC’s Division of Enforcement in May 2026 as a senior advisor to the Director. Zimmerman was previously an attorney at a large law firm and acted as a Deputy General Counsel at a accounting firm.

The SEC said the new unit will be staffed with both attorneys and accountants with specialized skills related to auditing and reporting related to securities regulation.
