The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has scheduled a roundtable for next month that will discuss 24 hour trading for US equity markets. The roundtable will address challenges and opportunities for an updated approach in markets that are largely automated.
While the SEC will discuss, it is already happening as a growing number of new and old platforms enable round the clock trading (or almost). Platforms like Charles Schwab, Interactive Brokers, Webull, Robinhood, and others offer continuous or near continuous executions. Some offer access to US securities in markets outs die the US.
SEC Chairman Paul Atkins acknowledges this reality.
“With the expansion to overnight trading, I’m excited at the prospect of U.S. equity markets aligning with those markets that already trade continuously and look forward to balancing round-the-clock trading with all-important investor and customer protections.”
This is more about where demand is requesting supply and investment platforms are catering to their customers by providing expanded access to traditional asset trading where crypto markets have already moved.
The roundtable will be held on September 17th and will be live-streamed to the public. Presenters have yet to be published.
