European Digital Bank N26 Introduces Wero for Instant Payments in Germany, France

European digital bank N26 has rolled out support for Wero, the pan-European instant payment system, inside its mobile app. The Berlin-based neobank announced the integration on 11 August 2026, making the service available to eligible customers in Germany and France.

A gradual expansion to additional markets is planned for later stages.

Wero, developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), is a digital wallet designed for fast, account-to-account transfers across participating European banks.

Until now, N26 customers could send money instantly without sharing an IBAN only to other N26 account holders. The addition of Wero removes that limitation.

Users can now transfer funds to friends, family or anyone else enrolled in the Wero network, regardless of which bank they use, simply by entering a mobile phone number or email address.

Funds typically arrive in the recipient’s account in under ten seconds, around the clock, thanks to SEPA Instant rails.

Activation is required within the N26 app before the feature can be used.

Once enabled, the experience remains familiar to existing customers while opening the service to a much wider European audience.

The company has long promoted frictionless payments as a core strength; this update extends that capability beyond its own user base.

Wero forms part of a broader European effort to create a unified, home-grown alternative to international payment platforms.

Backed by a consortium of banks, the system already operates in several countries including Germany, France, Belgium and others, with further expansion underway.

N26’s participation adds millions of digitally native users to the network and strengthens the reach of IBAN-free peer-to-peer transfers.

Daniel Lappas, Chief Product and Business Officer at N26, noted that instant payments without an IBAN have been central to the bank’s offering since its founding.

With Wero, the same simplicity is now available across a wider European banking ecosystem.

Earlier statements from company leadership highlighted the strategic value of supporting European payment solutions that improve choice, convenience and digital competitiveness.

The partnership is expected to evolve beyond person-to-person transfers.

Future phases may include e-commerce checkouts and payments at physical points of sale, creating a more complete digital wallet experience.

For the moment, the focus remains on seamless P2P functionality in the initial markets.

The move comes roughly one year after rival Revolut added similar support and follows N26’s formal membership agreement with Wero announced in December 2025.

At that time the bank outlined plans for a second-half 2026 launch beginning in Germany, France and the Netherlands.

The current rollout in two of those markets marks the practical delivery of that commitment.

For N26 customers in the supported countries, the change simplifies everyday money transfers.

No more exchanging long account numbers or waiting for beneficiary verification. A phone number or email is enough, and the money moves almost immediately.

As more banks join the Wero network, the usefulness of the service is likely to grow.N26 continues to position itself as a modern digital bank focused on ease of use and European-scale solutions. The addition of Wero reinforces that approach by embedding a regional payment standard directly into its app.
