There has been much discussion about California’s shortcomings and the rise of the Sunshine State. While California has incredible natural beauty, it falls short in governance, infrastructure, and tax burdens. Florida, by contrast, has a balanced budget, no income taxes, and is expected to soon eliminate property taxes for most residents. California, meanwhile, is pursuing a confiscation tax that initially targets billionaires and their global wealth, including unrealized gains. One estimate of the wealth that has left the state due to the proposed tax policy now hovers around $2 trillion.
Observers predict that once anticipated revenue from the confiscation tax inevitably falls short of rapacious government demands, state officials will target other demographics and services to levy fees and new taxes, eventually hitting the masses as the money runs out.
Today, in an article published on WSJ.com, it was revealed that Andreessen Horowitz, perhaps the world’s most prominent VC, has opened a new office in Florida, ostensibly to support defense startups.
According to the write-up, California-based Andreessen has opened a regional headquarter in West Palm Beach, a fast-growing hub of finance, defense, and other innovative firms.
While the focus is on the state’s support of the defense industry, which is booming, the message that Florida is open for business and there to help firms set up shop, as opposed to undermining and hindering economic development, persists. While California appears to take the golden goose of Silicon Valley for granted by punishing founders and creators, Florida is working to woo entrepreneurs and their supporters. Of course, this strategy delivers economic growth and job creation. In fact, Florida was at the top of the list of states for real GDP growth in 2025
Katherine Boyle, general partner at Andreessen Horowitz, took to X today to praise Florida and what the state government has achieved.

While the solution to California’s woes may be obvious to everyone except state leaders, innovators are voting with their feet. California continues to drive away both residents and businesses, further reducing tax revenue and worsening the budget shortfall. In fact, one area where the state of California led the country in 2025 was the most residents choosing to leave the jurisdiction for greener pastures. Andreessen’s news of setting up an office in Florida is just another canary in the coal mine that California state officials will keep ignoring.
