A group of seven Democratic senators issued a statement declaring their support for the CLARITY Act after voting against the bill this week, effectively killing it for now.
Senators Kirsten Gillibrand, Angela Alsobrooks, Cory Booker, Catherine Cortez Masto, Ruben Gallego, Mark Warner, and Raphael Warnock stated:
“Democrats have spent the last two years working to pass crypto legislation that would expand opportunity, protect consumers, punish bad actors, create regulatory certainty, and include strong, commonsense ethics provisions for elected officials. This week was a setback, but not the end of that important work. We remain committed to working in a bipartisan fashion to get this legislation passed.”
All the disingenuous Senators issuing the statement apparently miss the irony of their actions, which led to the bill’s defeat this week, with no clear path to revive it.
One reason may be the political calculus that about 67 million US adults hold crypto, and that blocking the bill may affect future votes.
While some Senators voting against the bill pointed to ethics shortfalls, Republicans updated the language in the days before the vote, adding more rules to mollify Democratic Senators’ demands.
Republican Congressman Tom Emmer, the Majority Whip, posted on X:
“Upset with Clarity failing? Blame a Senate Democrat. They are bad faith negotiators. In March, I was on stage with [Senator Gillibrand] at a Digital Chamber panel where she “agreed” with me and claimed she wanted “the United States to be at the forefront of this industry.” Senator Gillibrand just voted no on letting Clarity move in the Senate. EMPTY WORDS. The House passed a good, ready for primetime, nonpartisan Clarity Act in July 2025. Senate Democrats have further stalled this once-in-a-generation opportunity.”
