Brief: Independent Feature Film “The Garden Left Behind” Uses ebay to Crowdfund Production

Last week, Brazilian writer, film director, and producer, Flavio Alves, launched a fundraising campaign on eBay to raise funds for his upcoming independent feature film, The Garden Left Behind.

The Garden Left BehindThe new film stars Michael Madsen and centers around the story of a Mexican transgender woman that is living in New York and is struggling to build a life for herself as an undocumented immigrant. Alves, who wrote the film’s story with John Rotondo, will be producing and directing. Other producers include Roy Wol and Alex Cruz.

According to Alves and his team, The Garden Left Behind is one of the first films to this type of fundraising method instead of looking to reward-based crowdfunding platform like Indiegogo and Kickstarter for funding assistance.

Alves noted that the campaign has so far sold various products, including a Nikon DSLR camera and used baseballs.

“It’s a win-win situation. Everyone has things that they no longer use but imagine someone else might want, so we have designed an efficient system of collecting and selling a wide variety of items.”

The film is set to begin shooting next month throughout New York City. The production will also be announcing other cast members in the upcoming weeks.
