Education crowdfunds take hold of Houston

PledgeCentsWhile the dos and don’ts of crowdfunding are still being hashed out by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, at least two new crowdfunding platforms are taking hold in Houston.

However, these are not the type of crowdfunds the SEC is worried about — the commission is more concerned with crowdfunding users taking equity or debt in return for funding business projects.

Instead, some of the latest crowdfunding platforms in Houston are focused on their users donating or BrainFundinvesting in education.

As for the basics of how crowdfunding works, organizations or ventures sign up on an online platform and solicit money from groups of individuals — known or unknown. Monetary investments can be small, but if enough people contribute, the amount of money raised could be significant.
