Othermill Bringing Precision Machining To The Office

The Othermill is a product of Otherfab, an engineering group based in San Francisco. The Othermill aims to bring high-precision milling to home offices much the same way consumer 3D printers have done so for 3D printing.

Milling is the “opposite” of printing in that it is a subtractive process, so one starts with a block of some material and then mills the block away until left with a functional piece. The benefit milling has is that milling works with a wider variety of materials.

The Othermill is a portable, computer controlled, 3-axis mill that is specifically designed for use at home or in a small workspace. Our objective is to build a mill that is compact, clean, and quiet enough for use at home, yet is precise enough for high level electrical and mechanical prototyping work. The Othermill will be at home on your desk, in your workshop, or on your kitchen table.

The Othermill was originally designed with printed circuit boards in mind, but the mill can also be used for things like engraving. At 15 pounds it is also portable and comes with a built in handle.

A stretch goal was reached at $100,000 that created a new job (the team was able to hire another machinist) and the project itself is already fully funded.
