When Rob Rhinehart sought to raise some money to expand production of his self-made superfood drink, Soylent, he asked for a humble $100,000. A little over a week into the 30-day campaign he’d raised almost $400,000. The initial goal was met within two hours. Wow!
“People were really wondering if there was actually a demand for this sort of thing and I think we’ve demonstrated that there is,” Rhinehart told FORBES.
Why the intense interest? Rhinehart’s invention – a powder made up of nutrients that can be mixed with water and drank like a shake – can allegedly provide a balanced, nutritious diet while replacing most meals. Rhinehart himself says he’s spent weeks living on his wonder beverage, and today eats regular food only occasionally.
