Firefly Studios has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Gambitious for a third major installment of their popular real-time simulator series Stronghold. The game allows players to create and defend their kingdoms in real-time.
Stronghold Crusader 2 is the game we have been wanting to make for more than 10 years. The original Crusader is our favourite Stronghold game and without a doubt our fans’ favourite too, due to its fast-paced skirmish gameplay. It’s a game we still play in the office today and any sequel deserves our full attention. Crowdfunding and self-publishing Crusader 2 allows us to release the game “when it’s done”, creating a worthy sequel with the help of fans, who know our games best.
The original Stronghold was released in 2001 and was met with positive reviews. A later revamp, Stronghold: Crusader, updated the original with a new setting and new in-game features. The success of these titles propelled Firefly Studios, which now has a staff of 30.
The campaign on Gambitious is currently seeking €100,000 to bring Crusader 2 to market. According to the campaign page, the game is already Steam-approved is slated for a March 2014 release. The game is already in advanced stages after a year and a half of active development and has been self-funded by Firefly up to this point. The campaign funds are to be used for “game polish, a closed beta and additional game content.”
The campaign still has a ways to go, having raised around €22,000 at the time of writing. Firefly announced their intent to crowdfund the title on Gambitious last year.
Gambitious was launched by the same team behind Symbid and offers both rewards-based and equity-based models. Equity crowdfunding is open to UK residents. Investors can buy into revenue sharing via the innovative gaming-centric crowdfunding platform.
