Thomas Dodson of Selvage media, along with his team, is crowdfunding on Indiegogo to empower young people to avoid the dangers of social media. We have all read the stories – or know someone – who has suffered from cyber bullying or digital exploitation via ubiquitous social media.
Above the Fray is trying to crowd fund $25,000 on Indiegogo by December 25, 2013. The campaign was created because there is a profound need for a conversation with teens, parents and teachers about responsible social media use. The objective is to self-fund a program aimed at teaching safe and responsible social media use. The organizers do not view this as another anti-cyberbullying campaign but a deeper dive into analyzing the root cause of social media abuse and misuse. Above the Fray wants to give young people tools to empower them to build healthy, positive relationships online and to overcome the dark sides of social media use. The other variables – parents, teachers and friends must do their part as well
Two weeks into the campaign the Dodson is taking an interesting approach by creating a $25,000 reward level. One which will fund the entire project. While many campaigns have top level rewards, which can immediately transform the success of a crowdfunding campaign, this one is unique in the fact it targets one individual. Billionaire businessman and philanthropist Bill Gates.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Perk states:
Mr. and Mrs. Gates, we know you are passionate about helping young people. We also know you have the ability to fully fund Above The Fray with a few quick keystrokes. Please help us get this important program off the ground and into classrooms.
Backers today stand at 85 individuals having contributed over $8000. No word if Mr. Gates and his iconic foundation have yet considered the request. Whether or not the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation reviews this donation the unique perk is certainly going to drive some interest in what Above the Fray is attempting to achieve.
