Roger Ebert Documentary To Premiere At Sundance, Will Live Stream For Indiegogo Backers

The team behind the film just announced that the film is set to debut at the Sundance Film Festival next year. Backers of the crowdfunding campaign for the film will be treated to a live stream during the world premiere at Sundance on January 19, 2014.

Sundance is a special place for both Roger Ebert and Steve James — Steve’s first film won the Sundance Audience Award for Best Documentary in 1994, with Roger (who never missed Sundance when he was able to attend) being one of the most ardent champions of the film — and to have LIFE ITSELF have its world premiere there is especially fitting. Roger was all about the democratization of film, and to allow fans all over the world to share in the film’s premiere at Sundance, even if they can’t be in Park City, is keeping with the egalitarian values that he held dear.

The announcement was shared in a backer update posted to Indiegogo yesterday. According to the update, the live event will include a Q&A with the filmmakers and “other luminaries” that were close to Ebert. It may include Martin Scorsese, who is listed as

Sundance Film FestivalAccording to Movie City News, this is the sixth film to play at Sundance for director Steve James. His first was Hoop Dreams, a film that went on to become a classic documentary. It won the Audience Award for Documentaries at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival.

The streaming experience, powered by VHX via a password-protected code, will be hosted at http://www.Ebertmovie.com. Immediately following the premiere, a live stream of the on-stage Q&A from Sundance’s MARC theatre will be broadcasted exclusively for backers of the Indiegogo campaign.

The film will play at Sundance under the following schedule:

  • Sunday, January 19, 5:15pm | MARC, Park City
  • Monday, January 20, 1:00pm | Redstone 2, Park City
  • Thursday, January 23, 9:00pm | Sundance Resort, Provo
  • Friday, January 24, 9:00am | Temple Theatre, Park City
  • Saturday, January 25, 9:15pm | Tower, Salt Lake City
