Crowdfunding Platform for independent media IndieVoices has announced a new structure for campaign funding in an effort to more closely align backers and campaign creators commitment to a project. Called “Phased Flexible Funding” campaigns will now allow funding to be raised in stages thus allowing monies contributed may be released sooner and work may begin on projects at an earlier time. Many media projects, such as documentaries or photography projects, require significant time commitments. IndieVoices hopes to match the funding requirements with iterative goals of a project.
Funding projects such as Afghanistan Peace Warriors in this phased, flexible way means that money can be raised in stages, funds can be released sooner, and work can begin long before the total budget goal has been reached. Ultimately, this reflects the gradual and continuous nature of the creative process.
As described in a post by Reza on the IndieVoices platform;
Many artistic and social projects can be realized – step by step. In most cases, we know that it is not necessary to have the entirety of the required funding to launch our dreams.
It is for this reason that I wanted to rethink our methods of managing our collective financing, in collaboration with IndieVoices. We came up with an innovative model, called ‘Phased Flexible Funding’, which breaks down the fundraising process to bring it in line with the phases of the project. We have applied this to the Afghanistan Peace Warriors project. Now the due date for raising funds is not selected based upon the dictates of the banks, but instead upon the financial needs for each phase of the project.
IndieVoices is one of a few journalism crowdfunding platforms. IndieVoices looks to support independent media mainly in developing countries where media entities are limited or repressed. Recently the site announced a call for support of a Public Broadcasting TV (Hromadske TV) operating in the Ukraine amid the ongoing political crises.
IndieVoices continues to accept new projects around the world featuring investigative journalism, documentary filmmaking and diversity reporting. IndieVoices will give an extra “push” to projects that use or develop new technologies or that employ existing technologies in new ways to enhance news gathering or storytelling.
