Katherine Heigl Proposes Crowdfunding for “Jenny’s Wedding” on Indiegogo

Jennys Wedding CakeWith 30 days left, Katherine Heigl’s flexible funding crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo for her new independent film “Jenny’s Wedding” is slowly gaining momentum. In the last day, more than 100 backers have added their financial support.  With still $117K to raise, plenty of time remains for more backers to support the project.  The film is being produced in association with Indiegogo partner, From the Heart Productions, a non-profit that allows a backer to receive tax deductions with their crowdfunding support.

The film’s playfully structured wedding-themed campaign uses familiar wedding arrangement lingo, including subject headings such as “The Proposal,” “The Registry,” “The Wedding Party” and “The Wedding Planners,” to engage potential backers.  The campaign seeks to raise a “dowry” of $150,000 to cover music, post production, ADR sessions, color correction, editing, and an anticipated wide release.

Katherine Heigl and Film CrewAs with any wedding, rumors of drama and skepticism surround the pre-nuptials: has Heigl lost her star power? Will the movie be made? But what wedding is complete without some Bridezilla excitement?  Hats off to Heigl for her brazen  self-marketing.

To date, 438 funders remain positive about the film, which hopefully “marks the change in the equality landscape in the US.”  The film has been written and directed Mary Agnes Donoghue, with a veteran cast: Tom Wilkinson, Linda Emond, Grace Gummer and Alexis Bledel.

Katherine Heigl is best known for her work on “Grey’s Anatomy” and the films “Knocked Up,” “The Ugly Truth,” “27 Dresses,” “Life as We Know It,” and “One for the Money.”  Alexis Bledel, Jenny’s fiancé, played Rory Gilmore on “Gilmore Girls” and has since starred in the films “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” “Sin City” and “Tuck Everlasting.”  Tom Wilkinson, is a two-time Oscar nominee for the films “In the Bedroom” and “Michael Clayton”, as well as a Golden Globe and Emmy winner for Best Supporting Actor in his portrayal of Benjamin Franklin in the HBO mini-series “John Adams.” Wilkinson has appeared in over sixty motion pictures, including “The Best Marigold Hotel”, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” and “Shakespeare in Love.” Nominated for two Tonys, veteran stage actress Linda Emond recently appeared in the films “Julie & Julia,” “Stop-Loss,” and “Across the Universe.” Grace Gummer is known for her work on “Zero Hour” and “The Newsroom.” She recently appeared in the indie film “Frances Ha.”

Jennys Wedding Cast

“Jenny’s Wedding” follows a girl meets girl storyline: Jenny leads an openly gay life, except with her family. When she decides to start a family and marry her female “roommate,” her conventional family is forced to accept her or risk losing their daughter and their self respect.  Both moving and funny, “Jenny’s Wedding” hopes to send an important message about acceptance, transformation and love.

katherine Heigl Head ShotBackers can look forward to some interesting party favors, such as Jenny’s wedding dress. For $15,000, “the crème de la crème Perk,” one backer will receive the actual dress Heigl wears in the film, join the filmmakers for dinner and attend the independent film’s LA Premiere (as any considerate wedding guest, you will need to cover travel and lodging). For $1,000, several backers will receive a “Prop of the Week”; for the record, this week’s prop is the cake topper.  For $500, a Personalized Wedding Album with film photos and signed personal messages from Mary Agnes Donoghue and Katherine Heigl can be yours. For most pledges over $85, a donation will be made to the Cleveland chapter of PFLAG Organization, where “Jenny’s Wedding” was shot.

Will indiegogo crowdfunders say, “I do?” If funded, “Jenny’s Wedding” is tentatively scheduled to walk down the red carpet in November in Cleveland and Los Angeles, respectively.
