SCiO Blasts Past $200,000 as Consumer Physics Gets a Crowdfunding Boost

SCiO prototypesConsumer Physics, an OurCrowd portfolio company, has easily zoomed past their $200,000 target on Kickstarter and stands at over $670,000 today.  With over a month left in their crowdfunding campaign the consumer electronic product “SCIO” appears poised to easily break into the million dollar level.

SCIO App 2The Tel Aviv based company is prepared to deliver the “worlds first affordable molecular sensor”, using a handheld spectrometer that instantaneously generates relevant information on the chemical make up of anything you point scan with the device.  Consumer Physics has positioned the product as a consumer device that you may scan food, plants and medications.  The scanning device pairs with your smartphone and associated app storing and delivering the information.

SCiO is based on near infra-red spectroscopy – technology that has been in use for quite some time.  The analysis is generated by capturing the unique optical signature of molecules.  A spectrometer breaks down the light to generate final results – a process that is not new.  What the project team has delivered is a low cost device with advanced signal processing algorithms to transfer information in real time.

For $199 you can reserve one of the first (all early bird offers were quickly scooped up).  With the SCiO you will be able to get nutritional facts about the food you preparing to consume or check if your fruit is ripe enough to eat.  The creators claim the applications are endless .

Consumer Physics was founded in 2011 by Dror Sharon and Damian Damian GoldringGoldring.  The pair had met 15 years prior while attending university at The Technion – Israel Institute of Technology.  After two years working in the garage the two have finally created a consumer level product.  Their team has grown as the promise of the SCiO has increased.

The crowdfunding campaign ends on June 15.  Delivery for superstar backers starts in October.  The rest of us will have to wait until December 2014.
