Globe to Globe Hamlet Campaign Struggles on Kickstarter

Globe to Globe Hamlet

With less than a week left of its crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, the Globe to Globe Hamlet is struggling to make its £200k goal. In celebration of William Shakespeare’s 450th birthday, Globe Theatre opened the campaign for its most ambitious tour yet: a two-year world tour of Hamlet that will visit “every single country on earth.”

Shakespeare's Globe

As previously reported by Crowdfund Insider, investors backing this project will enable the famous Globe troupe to access global audiences. While a large amount of theaters will pay for performances, many tour fees remain to cover resources and travel expenses, including gratis or price reduced tickets.

According to the Shakespeare global campaign, sixteen men and women will travel by boat, train, 4×4, tall ship, bus and airplane across the seven continents, performing in a huge range of unique and atmospheric venues – from village squares to national theatres, from palaces to beaches. The production is a fresh, pared-down version of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy of deferred revenge.

Globe to Globe Hamlet ActorsThe company of twelve actors and four stage managers will use a completely portable set to stage a Hamlet that celebrates all the exuberance and invention of Shakespeare’s language in a brisk two hours and forty minutes. Each of the actors has had to learn a new musical instrument to makeup for the small cast.

One of the stage managers, Dave McEvoy, noted, “It’s about reaching all those people who would not normally see a Globe show or even a Shakespeare show.”

Actors Ladi Emeruwa and Naeem Hayat will share the role of Hamlet while other male and female parts will be portrayed in rotation by Keith Bartlett, John Dougall, Miranda Foster, Phoebe Fildes, Beruce Khan, Tom Lawrence, Jennifer Long, Rawiri Paratene, Matthew Romain and Amanda Wilkin.

The production will be directed by Dominic Dromgoole and Bill Buckhurst,  Jonathan Fensom will be in charge of design and Bill Barclay is composing the music. Laura Forrest Hay will provide additional music.

So far the campaign has raised only £50,795 with 737 investors.
