Medical Crowdfunding Campaign for Porn Star Has Silver Lining

Eden AlexanderAs was widely reported this past weekend on these pages, and just about everyplace else, porn star Eden Alexander launched a crowdfunding campaign on GiveForward for a dire medical situation only to encounter the ban hammer as she allegedly transgressed the platforms terms of service.  In following Eden’s twitter account she quickly became very concerned about her ability to pay medical bills since she was without work and had no health insurance.

But yes there is a silver lining.  Her friend Kitty Fisher quickly launched an “Emergency Medical Care Fund” campaign on Crowdtilt and with the additional publicity the campaign quickly hit their targeted goal of raising $5000.  As of today Kitty has raised almost $10,000, with more than 3 weeks to go, for her friend and in a recent post shared their next steps:

Thank you so much everyone for your continued generosity!

We’ll be sitting down with Eden to make a financial plan that we’ll make transparent to you, the donators. She and I have figured out a way to get funds directly to her as soon as she’s ready to receive them- and thanks to people like you, she won’t be overwhelmed during her recovery with increasing debt.

Money not directly going to Eden’s recovery, medical bills, and care will be donated to organizations run by and for sex workers. We want to ensure that *any* sex worker can ask for and receive the help they need, and want to put any extra funds into sustainable community care.

Thank you again for proving, en masse, that sex workers do matter. As a sex worker who has struggled similarly myself, it’s humbling and gratifying to see.

On top of all this – GiveForward has recognized the error of their ways and will be updating their policies to more effectively manage similar situations.  Yes lemons to lemonade.  Kudos to GiveForward for the “mea culpa”.  And Eden best of luck.
