Cleveland, Ohio resident Renee DeLuca has launched a crowdfunding campaign on CrowdBrewed to resurrect the New Albion Brewing Company’s iconic American ale. The project is seeking to raise $75,000 to contract-brew the original recipe.
The campaign’s website reads, “The very first American Ale, New Albion has a deep gold appearance. Its subtle malt character complements the pleasant citrus-floral notes from the Cascade hops. You’ll find a spicy, fruity, light pine character; clean, with moderate bitterness. This medium-bodied beer is the ale that started it all. Enjoy the clean finish with a slight sweetness that leaves with a lingering orange-citrus note.”
The New Albion details are the following:
- Style: American Pale Ale
- Malt: Two-row pale malt blend
- Hop Variety: American Cascade
- IBUs: 30
- ABV: 6%
- Yeast: New Albion Ale yeast; cataloged at UC-Davis
According to Cleveland Scene Magazine, DeLuca’s father, Jack McAuliffe, launched New Albion in 1976. He took inspiration from Scotland for his craft. Unfortunately, financial woes appeared in the early ‘80s and New Albion was forced to close its doors.
For most of her life, DeLuca was unaware McAuliffee was even her father. She finally had a meeting with him and told the magazine, “One of the first things I said when I found out what my dad did was, ‘Beer is in my blood; I knew it!'”
“Jack never made a lot of money brewing, but he inspired a lot of people who did go on to make a lot of money,” she added.
Although New Albion was revived by Jim Koch and Boston Beer Company in 2013, DeLuca is now hoping to bring the brand back to life.
Sharing details of what the funding will go towards, DeLuca wrote, “Funds raised here will go directly towards contract brewing our original recipe, with an eye on brewing our New Albion Porter and New Albion Stout recipes in the near future. We need your involvement and support to continue moving forward.
“Whether you want to support us with a donation, contribute to receive a great reward, or pass along our campaign to your beer-loving friends, our mission is to get New Albion beer into your glass SOON.”
