Disney Veteran Animators Hit Indiegogo To Finish 2D Short Film

Although 2D films are a thing of the past, according to Disney, a group of animators from the production giant have launched a $80,000 crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter for their steampunk-themed short film Hullabaloo to life. Within a few days, the project surpassed its initial goal and raised $116,129 from close to 3,000 backers.

Hullabaloo 2Hullabaloo is a 2D, also known as hand drawn, animated steampunk themed film that is hoping to help preserve the “dying” art of 2D animation. By supporting the project, backers to help save 2D animation from its untimely demise. The animators stated, “We want you to join us in making a short film that will showcase the world of Hullabaloo, which we can show to invesotrs to fund a full length 2D feature.”

“2D animation is a beautiful but dying art form that the animation studios have all but abandon. But if we can fund this film with your help, we will be able to show investors that people really do want to see a feature length animated steampunk film, allowing us to get the tremendous amount of funding needed to complete Hullabaloo as the full-length feature we believe you want to see.”

Hullabaloo 5Veronica Daring returns home from an elite finishing school to find her father, the eccentric inventor Jonathan Daring, missing without a trace. The only clue that Veronica found points her to Daring Adventures, an abandon amusement park used by her father to test his steam-powered inventions. She then discovers a strange girl named Jules, a fellow inventor, who agrees to help Veronica locate her missing father along with debunking his secrets.

The animators also noted in addition to helping to save the 2D art, Hullabaloo will aim to encourage girls to explore science and adventure. The film’s key protagonists, Veronica Darling and her friend Jules, are both young women scientists who use their intellect, wits and courage to fight greed and corruption.

The animators behind Hullabaloo are:

  • Hullabaloo 1James Lopez: Credits include The Lion King, The Princess and the Front, Pocahontas, Flush Away, Hercules, Tom and Jerry, The Emperor’s New Groove, and Paperman.
  • Bruce Smith: Credits include Tarzan, The Emperor’s New Groove, The Princess and the Frog. He is also the creator of the Disney television series The Proud Family. 
  • Rick Farmiloe: His work can be seen in The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast.
  • Minkyu Lee: Credited for The Princess and The Front, and Frozen.
  • Sandro Cleuzo: Worked on Enchanted, The Emperor’s New Groove, and The Princess and the Frog. He also teamed up with Dreamworks for Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Masters.
  • Sarah Airriess: Her work can be seen in The Princess and The Frog, and Wreck-It Ralph. She also played a key role in the look of Papeman.

Besides saving 2D animation, backers will enjoy perks that range from an executive online showing of the complete short film to original sketches and art books.

The campaign will be featured on the crowdfunding giant’s platform until October 1st.
