New York Startup Launches Kickstarter Campaign For New Power & Lights First Aid Kit; Reaches Over $100,000 First Day

The Back 1

Hoping to have another successful Kickstarter project, while offering up a new way to stay safe during an emergency, New York City startup WakaWaka launched a crowdfunding campaign on the global platform for its power and light first aid kit, Base. Originally seeking $70,000, the new kit stormed past its initial goal and has so far raised $119,392 from 957 backers.

The WakaWaka Base is considered the ultimate all-in-one compact kit for when the lights go out. It  converst solar energy into battery power for any device connected to it via USB. Its 5,000 or 10,000 mAh battery is enough for multiple smartphone charges or an entire week of light. The separate, 7,5 or 10 watt solar panel ensures the Base will charge even on cloudy days.

Below shows all of the Base’s key features:

The Back 3

Explaining why they created Base, the WakaWaka team explained, “Hurricanes in the fall, blizzards in the winter… technology is there to keep us connected when a storm hits and the power goes out. But these days, most of that technology operates on rechargeable batteries. So what happens when those batteries run out of charge? Whether you want to prepare for the next winter storm, whether you are a hiker or camper, or if you just want to be powered up as you travel around the world: The Base is here for you. A dependable, affordable solar solution for power and light, that will always be ready when its needed most.”

The Back 4Setting up the Base is super easy. According to its instructions, the user just needs to place their solar panel in direct sunlight for a day and the battery pack will be completely full. The kit will also charge on cloudy, this means that those who live in cities with less sun intensity, such as New York or Seattle will still be able to enjoy its advantages.

Currently, backers may receive their very own Base kit for only $89 and will have it by May 2015. The company expects the suggested retail prices for the WakaWaka Base to be up to 40% more than your Kickstarter Reward tiers.

The campaign is set to close on November 13th.
