Canadian Civilians Launch an Indiegogo Campaign for Fallen Servicemen Patrice Vincent & Nathan Cirillo

Earlier this week, devastating news hit Canada when two men, warrant officer Patrice Vincent and corporal Nathan Cirillo, were both killed because they were servicemen of the country. Both deaths have shaken the country, and now a group of civilians have launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to help the victims families during this rough time.

Cirillo-VincentVincent was killed on Monday (October 20th) after a hit and run incident in Quebec, while Cirillo died Wednesday (October 22nd) after being shot while guarding the National War Memorial in Ottawa. Both attacks were described as a terrorist events by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

According to iPolitics, The Stand on Guard Fund, which launched late Wednesday night, originally set of a goal of $10,000 for the Ciriloo and Vincent families, but passed that goal in less than 12 hours.  Various organizations have donated funds for the cause, including the following:

Stand on GuardDuring an interview with the media outlet, One of the campaign’s organizers, Rob Rosenfeld of Ottawa, stated it was important that the project be entirely focused on the families. “We wanted to make sure that in this time of difficulty for the families that there as an opportunity for Canadians to show their support and to help shoulder a small part of the burden that these people are facing.”

Rosenfeld also noted that it has been an “incredible feeling” to see Canadians pledge their support. “As a Canadian, as an Ottawan, and as somebody who has worked on the Hill and been through those halls and walked by the cenotaph, I don’t know how many times, that sanctity was taken away by someone.”

The Sand on Guard fund is working with True Patriot Love to disburse all monies raised between the families equally. As Shaun Francis, Chair of True Patriot Love eloquently expressed, “Grassroots movements like the Stand on Guard Fund are the truest demonstrations of our nation standing together in their support for the members of our Canadian Armed Forces and their families.”

The campaign is set to close on October 29th.
