While you recharge your own batteries by relaxing on some sun-blessed beach, your cell phone could be powering up from the same solar source. StrongVolt‘s solar chargers work as fast as a wall outlet to power up USB devices, be they smartphones, tablets or GoPros. After all, you’ll need proof of the world-record-setting sandcastle you built, before the tide took it down.

StrongVolt is now crowdfunding on CircleUp, an equity-based crowdfunding site based in San Francisco, Calif. The solar charger company had sales of $1.2 million in 2014, a figure projected to reach $6 million this year. Through a January 2014 Kickstarter campaign, StrongVolt raised $68,000—680 percent of its funding goal—from nearly 1,000 backers. It now notes that it’s receiving from “interest from retailers like Home Depot, Walmart, Sam’s Club, REI, Cabelas, West Marine and more.

The StrongVolt solar charger features SunTrack Technology (patent pending), and is the only solar charger that has an on-board processor, indicator lights and a selector switch, according to StrongVolt’s website. It was designed with durability in mind, and was created with monocrystalline cells made to endure very hot and cold weather conditions. The canvas was developed for outdoor use, and damp conditions will not damage the exterior part of the solar charger. For additional convenience, the device is also hangable, with gromit loop holes that can attach to carabineer clips. The chargers are available with different powerbanks, from 3W to 18W.

Q Street Startups tells how CEO and co-founder Ian Sells and co-founder Adam Weiler developed the idea for StrongVolt:

The idea for the San Diego-based startup began in 2011 during Sells’ trip to China with co-founder Adam Weiler as they searched for new business opportunities. They discovered solar chargers at a giant trade show, saw an opportunity in the industry, and began selling solar chargers for laptops online. Soon, they began to make the chargers smaller to meet their customers’ demand for reliable chargers for smaller devices such as tablets, iPhones, and iPads. “We knew there were problems because smart devices required a constant power source. From that we were able to spend some money and develop our proprietary patented technology.  We hired engineers to help us. We knew what problem we were trying to solve and we found the talent that could help us. The process to develop the technology took about four months.”

Company milestones include a utility patent that was filed and fast-tracked, as well as distribution agreements with Summit/Adventure 16. On the human side, StrongVolt’s sales team was part of Mophie and LifeProof, and the company has been covered by the likes of PC World and Backpacker magazines, as well as VentureBeat.com.
