On Thursday, USB hardware innovator Plugable Technologies launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter for its new MacBook USB-C docking station.
The dock allows MacBook 2015 users to connect up to three additional monitors and four extra USB devices to the computer’s single USB-C port, while retaining full charging power. The dock will also work with any of the coming generation of USB-C devices, including Google Chromebook Pixel 2015.
Former Microsoft USB/Bluetooth engineer and Plugable founder, Bernie Thompson stated:
“With just one or two ports on USB-C computers, a docking station is essential. The challenge is in solving the power and connectivity demands, and we’ve focused on a no-compromise solution.”
With the space-saving vertical design, the Plugeable Ultimate Docking Station will transform a MacBook into a complete desktop replacement through its single USB-C port. This will provide connections for one 4k monitor, two 2K monitors and four USB-C devices.
The Plugable Ultimate USB-C Universal Docking Station supports:
- 3 – Up to three additional displays on supported systems
- 1 – Front USB 3.1 USB Type-C (Gen 1) port
- 1 – Front USB 3.0 Type-A port
- 2 – Rear USB 3.0 Type-A ports
- Gigabit Ethernet
- Audio In/Out (3.5mm “headphone” jacks)
- 60W Power Adapter
The company noted that recently introduced competitive docking stations rely on the MacBook’s 29-watt power adapter to power both laptop and dock. This can cause devices to lose power and can affect the power supply’s lifespan.
Last summer, Plugable successfully raised funds through Kickstarter for its UD-PRO8 docking station. The new initiative is set to close on July 1st.
