Failbetter Games Returns to Kickstarter For “Sunless Sea” Sequel & Secures Nearly £160,000 in 24 Hours

Failbetter Games, the London-based video game studio behind Kickstarter success Sunless Seahas returned to the crowdfunding giant’s platform to raise funds for the game’s sequel, Sunless Skies. Originally seeking £100,000, the project has already secured nearly £160,000 from more than 4,200 backers.

Sunless Skies is described as a 2D, top-down, story-led game of exploration, corruption, and jeopardy. Although its successor is Sunless Sea, the game doesn’t require the player to know the previous game to play or enjoy Sunless Skies. The new game’s story reads:

It is the dawn of the 20th century, and London has taken to the stars! As the captain of a spacefaring locomotive you’ll behold wonders and battle cosmic abominations in the furthest heavens. Stake your claim. Fight to survive. Speak to storms. Murder a sun. Face[ judgment]. Sunless Skies is set in the Fallen London Universe, a deep, dark and [marvelous] world that we’ve been creating for seven years. In our games, hand-crafted narrative and emergent gameplay create compelling stories for your character.”

Producer at Failbetter Games, Lotte Bevan, shared with Forbes:

“We’re taking what we did well in Sunless Sea and making it better in Sunless Skies. We’re also trying to remove areas of frustration in the original game. So in Sunless Sea you die a lot and that’s part of the fun, and that’s great but the downside of that is you often find yourself repeating early game content quite a lot.”

Sunless Skies is available to purchase through the campaign starting at 15. Other backer perks include digital soundtrack, credited in-game, and digital Lore Book. Estimated delivery for all perks is May 2018. The game’s campaign is set to close on March 3rd.
