Candidate for Hong Kong Chief Executive Crowdfunds Over $583K

John Tsang, a former Financial Secretary of Hong Kong who has had a long government career, declared last month that he is running for Chief Executive of Hong Kong.  His crowdfunding campaign launched five days ago on FringeBacker, and he has raised thus far HK$4,519,604 (approximately $583,000) with 24 days left to go.

According to Singapore’s Straits Times, Tsang chose a Hong Kong operated crowdfunding platform to fundraise on to encourage local startups’ development.

Tsang added;

“I’m very grateful to the public for support and donations. It doesn’t matter whether the amount is big or small.”

Opponent for Chief Executive of Hong Kong Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor has commented on Tsang’s crowdfunding and social media use as such;

“Their use of social media was more mature and better prepared… We will roll out details later on how people can donate towards my electioneering.”

Over 22,000 people so far have donated to Tsang’s crowdfunding campaign.
