With the highly anticipated Mystery Science Theater 3000 revival set to premiere April 14th on video streaming service, Netflix, the crew behind the Kickstarter-funded project announced an upcoming livestream preview event and released a teaser trailer.
As previously reported, Joel Hodgson, the creator of Mystery Science Theater 3000, launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter in 2015 with a mission to raise as much funding as possible so that he could to revive the series. Originally seeking $2 million, the initiative secured $5,764,229 from 48,270 backers. Hodgson notably stated:
“The Kickstarter was my idea. I’d been working with Shout Factory trying to get the rights to MST3K for the last five years, and we finally closed the deal three months ago. I just think it’s really important to me that we start with the fans and talk to them, measure how interested they are and how much they care. If I had just done a traditional network deal and then talked to them, it didn’t feel right to me. I didn’t care whether it was 10 people or 100,000 people, I just wanted to know who they are, what they want, what their expectations are.”
In a recent update, Hodgson shared that those who pledged for EXPERIMENT 25 or higher will be able to go to the livestream preview event. The preview screening of Experiment 1101 will be available to stream starting at 12:01 AM PT on April 9th.
