Seed&Spark Roundup: Leading Film Industry Crowdfunding, Hosting Hometown Heroes Filmmakers Rally

Seed&Spark has made its niche within film industry crowdfunding, raising over $7M for film projects since launching in 2012 under the helm of CEO & Founder Emily Best.

The platform is currently hosting a crowdfunding rally for national filmmakers in partnership with Mark Duplass.  The Hometown Heroes Rally invites US filmmakers from across the country to bring diverse stories rooted in real communities to the screen. Up to 5 winners will have their narrative feature executive produced by the Duplass Brothers and receive up to $25,000 in cash for production.

To participate, candidates must launch crowdfunding campaign on Seed&Spark raising at least $7,500 in cash. Campaigns can be for any phase of filmmaking, from development through post. All campaigns must run from September 12 – October 13, 2017. To qualify, candidates must gather at least 500 campaign followers on Seed&Spark by October 13, 2017. Followers include all contributors, as well as anyone who clicks “follow” from the campaign page to receive email updates. Participants must also post 2 project updates a week during your 30-day crowdfunding campaign; at least 1 update during the campaign must contain video content original to the campaign. Finalists will be announced on October 16.

Stephen Follows also recently connected with the platform to review its claim of the “the highest success rate in the crowdfunding business.” He noted the platform’s transparency and openness in his research and shared his research regarding the platform.

His research indicated that Seed&Spark has launched 744 projects on the platform, of which 46% were short films, 35% were feature films, 16% were series-based and the remaining few projects include film festivals, compies, platforms, parties and VR experiences. Follows’ research confirms that Seed & Spark enjoys a success rate of 75%, compared to his research on Kickstarter film projects, which garnered a much lower 43% success rate.

Another interesting stat: the average platform pledge is $113, although monthly shifts were noted, depending on the projects available on the site.

The five most successful Seed & Spark film projects include Ordinary Women, which raised $207,138 from 3,774 backers; Greatest Hits, which raised $121,425 from 92 backers and
Money & Violence Season 2, which raised $90,797 from 1,454 backers. Current live campaigns on Seed&Spark include Clementine, Rigor Samsa Series and Stronger than Pretty.
