Chicago Cubs Catcher Rene Rivera Launches Hurricane Maria Relief Campaign on GoFundMe

Following Hurricane Maria’s devastation on Puerto Rico, Chicago Cubs catcher and Puerto Rico native, Rene Rivera, and his wife have launched a GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign dedicated to the relief efforts.

The storm, which hit earlier this week, devastated Puerto Rico, with reports that at least six were killed during the storm. According to The Washington Post, three of the fatalities occurred in the municipality of Utuado as a result of mudslides. The island had also experienced damage during last week’s Hurricane Irma.

The campaign’s description reads:

“The puertorrican Cubs have united forces to help! Puerto Rico needs us more than ever, that is why we have joined forces to help any way we can. We have created this that will help rebuild our island. Every dollar counts! Please help us help!”

In the latest update, Rico and his wife shared:

“Thank you guys for the outpouring support! Please keep sharing and helping us help! We are waiting to get instructions from the First Lady of Puerto Rico, Beatriz Rosello and from the Salvation Army to see exactly where this money will be best utilized.”
Rico shared on Twitter:

So far, the campaign has attracted more than $8,000 from nearly 150 donors. All donations will be used to help Puerto Rico’s rebuilding efforts.
