Sí, Ja, Yes, Oui…Speakly CEO Ott Ojamets Shares Insight on New Seedrs Campaign & the Language Learning Revolution

Speakly, a tech-based language learning solution, has partnered with Seedrs for a €90,007 fund raise for 10.00% equity offered. The UK-based is pre-valued at €810,000. Successful angel-investor Sonny Aswani has backed Speakly. Co-founded by Ott Ojamets in 2012, Speakly aims to ignite a language learning revolution by bringing 21st century learning solutions to those who not only struggle with language learning but also its outdated methodologies.

“We decided to crowdfund because we felt that it’s the best way to involve people who believe in our cause and want the teaching methodologies to change. We believe that many people have experienced the inefficient, outdated methodologies still commonly used, and understand the need for a new one,” explained Speakly CEO Co-founder Ott Ojamets via email. “We also felt that the times when it was a standard to have a few big investors and then spending a large chunk of the investment on marketing, are over. The general population’s interest in investing has increased, so has the need for new learning technologies. Our strength is in numbers. It should be normal to learn a foreign language in a couple of months and that’s what Speakly is all about. We see crowdfunding as a great way of bringing people together with a common goal. Seedrs is a great partner – they are good communicators and they have a large base of investors who are interested in world-changing innovation. Therefore we felt that it’s a great match.”

Speakly uses smart algorithms that adjust to an individual’s unique strengths in memorizing the words and sentences that are statistically the most relevant. Learners will actively address speaking, writing, and comprehension skills from day one, experiencing real-life situations. Speakly expects that beginners who invest about 30 minutes per day on Speakly should achieve an active communication level in just 4 months.

“Speakly is growing rapidly already and we are really excited about the results that are coming in from our users,” added Ojamets. “There is a great need for faster, more efficient learning programs, and we are projecting that Speakly will have 100k users by the end of next year.”

A former French teacher, Ojamets is also a Speakly student:

“Currently I’m learning Italian with Speakly. I’m really thrilled about it because it’s the first language in Speakly that I can learn from the beginning. It’s so exciting to see my own progress and start speaking. I really love this feeling of tangible, measurable success. It’s something that I recommend to everybody who is struggling with learning a language currently.”

Speakly’s language learning program uses a three step system that might give Duolingo a run for its money. First, the program teaches words ranked according to statistical relevance and then enables the language to be used actively through writing and speaking exercises. Speakly then affords learners the opportunity to experience and practice real-life situations via  smartphone or computer.Speakly uses spaced repetition to push newly learned information into one’s long-term memory efficiently, i.e. repeating exercises that refuse to stick.

“One of the main issues people have is the inability of really speaking a foreign language. They might have learned the language for years,” Ojamets clarified via email. “They might even understand it, but the right sentences just don’t come out when it’s time to speak. It’s a really common theme and this it’s something that we want to change. One of my favorite parts of the whole thing that always gets to me, is people sending us feedback about how we made them believe in themselves again, after thinking for years that they just don’t have the knack for languages. It’s so gratifying. And also people sharing Speakly with their friends and family is something that gives me a warm feeling. It lets us know that we are indeed doing the right thing and people really need it.”

When asked how Ojamets personally mastered language learning, he responded,

“To be honest, I was never the model student at school. When something bored me I just ignored it. This was the case with language classes too – I found them utterly useless and dead boring. I wouldn’t say I was lazy, I was just practical. What’s the point of wasting years of your life learning a language and still not being able to get the girl? That was how my teenage brain worked. (In my own defence I can say that I’ve matured quite a bit.)”

Ojamets contiuned,

“Jokes aside, this defiance actually made me learn six languages. At first, I was just rebellious and wanted to challenge the system. I wanted to show that there was a more efficient way of learning languages so I tried different methods and looked into the most recent science of how to learn best. I wanted to hack the learning process, to make learning fast and easy – and it worked. With the methodology I had created and perfected over the years, I learned a couple of more languages. Then I understood that it could help others learn faster too. There are too many people out there agonizing over language classes. I feel that it’s my duty to help them. That’s basically how Speakly was born…I truly believe that the Speakly method is how languages should really be taught and learned.”
