Onfido, a U.S. based identity verification platform, announced on Tuesday it has been appointed to the FIDO Alliance Board of Directors. As previously reported, Onfideo reportedly uses machine learning to help more than 1,500 companies to verify their users’ identity online. The company noted it received more than $60 million in funding from investors such as Safesforce and Microsoft.
“Our technology verifies the authenticity of a user’s identity document and compares it with their facial biometrics. As a global innovator in the Computer Vision space, our AI learns to identity fraud as it evolves over time, enabling our clients to rapidly onboard more users while protecting themselves against fraudulent activity. Our goal is to apply cutting-edge research to build powerful, simple products that drive trust, inclusion and safety online.”
Onfido reported that in partnership with its members, the FIDO Alliance develops open, standards-based specifications for interoperable strong authentication across mobile, web and desktop applications. Through its use of on-device public key cryptography and convenient authenticators such as security keys and biometrics, FIDO Authentication is more secure, private and easy to use than passwords and other forms of strong authentication such as SMS two-factor authentication.
Speaking about joining the Board, Parker Crockford, Director of Policy at Onfido, stated;
“With data hacks providing an abundance of usernames and passwords, traditional authentication methods such as social security numbers and knowledge-based questions are becoming outdated and more vulnerable to attack. We’re excited to join the FIDO Alliance board and bring our expertise in identity proofing, biometrics and machine learning to the organization to help establish a more robust, secure way for consumers to be authenticated and for businesses to onboard customers faster.”
Brett McDowell, executive director of the FIDO Alliance, added:
“We’re pleased to welcome Onfido to the FIDO Alliance board of directors. Onfido brings innovative identity verification technology and a dedication to security that aligns with the FIDO Alliance’s mission to develop more secure and convenient solutions that reduce the world’s dependence on passwords. We look forward to their contributions as a board member, especially as we explore standards and best practices for identity verification techniques in the context of identity binding to FIDO device registration and/or device recovery workflows.”
