Startup to Challenge Established Soft Drink Brands, GUNNA Crowdfunds on Seedrs Quickly Topping £500,000 Goal

GUNNA, a new soft drinks startup that seeks to challenge established brands with less sugar and more flavor, is crowdfunding on Seedrs. The startups has quickly topped a £500,000 goal and now stands at over £524,000 in overfunding mode. Gunna is raising equity capital at a pre-money valuation of £3.8 million. It is interesting to highlight that, so far, just 6 investors have funded this round.

GUNNA is the creation of Melvin Jay, founder of marketing strategy and innovation consultancy Clear Ideas, which he sold to M&C Saatchi in 2017.

GUNNA notes that carbonated drinks is a huge market in the UK with “craft soft drinks” growing at a rate of 56% year over year. Consumers are moving away from the big brands (think Pepsi, Coke, etc.) to more appealing brands. GUNNA reports a 44% increase in top line revenue during 2018-2019 and is currently stocked across the UK in big storefronts like Sainsbury’s and more.

So what is GUNNA selling? A soft drink that has less than 5% sugar and no artificial flavors and colors. Made with sparkling spring water blended with natural flavours, each drink has just 73 calories per bottle. GUNNA clearly is looking to appeal to consumers that are concerned about what they consume and where it comes from.

Jay explains:

“More and more we’re seeing young people opting for non-alcoholic options. But while the craft brewing market has blossomed, the soft drinks market really hasn’t followed suit. Most soft drinks are still packed with sugar, sweeteners and additives that the millennial consumer just isn’t interested in anymore. We took that on board, and created a range of drinks that have the character and pizzazz of a craft brewery, with no alcohol and no hidden artificial sugars, all without compromising on flavour.”

GUNNA says their last crowdfunding round overfunded by 64%, “now we’re back giving investors that missed out the chance to come on board.”
