Estonia: Highest Per Capita Unicorns in the World

This is an interesting factoid. In a tweet, Funderbeam noted that Estonia claims the title of having the highest number of unicorns, per capita, in the world.

Funderbeam is a global funding and trading platform for private companies. The company is regulated by the Estonian Financial Supervision Authority in the EU, by the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK, and licensed as a Recognised Market Operator and as a Capital Markets Services entity by the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

In a blog post last month (January), Funderbeam noted that Estonia is home to 7 companies that are valued at $1 billion or more. This means that three companies have leveled up in just a few short weeks. At that time the list included; Bolt, Wise, Pipedrive, Playtech, ID.me,Skype, and Zego.

In a 2021 roundup, Funderbeam shared that during the year the online capital formation platform completed 29 fundraises for a total of €21.4 million – an improvement on the previous years with more funds raised than both 2019 and 2020 combined.

Funderbeam is an integrated securities crowdfunding platform with a secondary marketplace that currently is home to 61  firms available for trading.

Estonia has consistently punched above its weight class for years now and home to more than 80 Fintechs. A business and innovation-friendly regulatory approach combined with an entrepreneurial population have helped the country to become a center of value creation and headquarters to an impressive number of unicorns.
