Representative Maxine Waters, Chair of the House Committee on Financial Services, returned to Twitter to prod Sam Bankman-Fried to testify in front of a Committee hearing next week on the FTX bankruptcy.
Earlier this month, Chair Waters invited Bankman-Fried to testify via Twitter. Bankman-Fried responded, indicating he would attend with the caveat something could take place before the event takes place – impacting his ability to participate.
In a series of Tweets, Waters added:
“Based on your role as CEO and your media interviews over the past few weeks, it’s clear to us that the information you have thus far is sufficient for testimony. As you know, the collapse of FTX has harmed over one million people. Your testimony would not only be meaningful to Members of Congress, but is also critical to the American people. It is imperative that you attend our hearing on the 13th, and we are willing to schedule continued hearings if there is more information to be shared later.”
Bankman-Fried was the second-largest donor to the Democrat party in the last cycle, causing some to infer collusion between the political party and his business operations that have seen billions vaporized. A picture of Chair Waters and Bankman-Fried has been widely circulated on the internet, providing optics that allege guilt by association. At the same time, some have been willing to accept Bankman-Fried’s proclamations that the failure of FTX was not due to fraud but simply due to mismanagement.
The hearing is scheduled to take place on December 13th and will be live-streamed on the Committee’s website, with or without Bankman-Fried.
