Global Fintechs Adyen, Nexi, Stripe Introduce Apple Tap to Pay Service in Italy

Global Fintech firms Nexi, Stripe, Adyen have introduced Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) Tap to Pay service in Italy

Payments Fintechs Nexi, Stripe and Adyen have begun providing firms in Italy a way to take payments from clients that relies on Apple’s iPhones.

Apple’s Tap to Pay service leverages a wireless technology, called near-field communication (NFC), which enables the exchange of data between devices over a relatively short distance.

Nexi, which claims to be one of Europe’s largest payments groups by volume of transfers completed, currently provides shopowners the option to use their smartphones to process digital payments using the NexiSoftPOS app.

Roberto Catanzaro, Chief Business Officer of Merchant Solutions at Nexi said:

“Enabling Nexi SoftPOS also on Apple devices provides Italian merchants with more flexibility and choice, resulting in an easier shopping experience for consumers and creating additional revenue opportunities to grow their business. With this expanded mobile offering, we are taking another step toward increasing the adoption of digital payments in Italy and further afield, as we look to help merchants and consumers across Europe benefit from more convenient payment options.”

But until now, that could be used only on smartphones running on an Android operating system and not Apple’s iOs.

Using a mobile phone to handle virtual payments is quite useful for smaller shops, which may in this way avoid having to pay for a particular piece of hardware.

Global Fintech Adyen, which mainly offers digital commerce services to large corporate customers and has been extending its offer to include bricks-and-mortar stores, also states that it was introducing the Tap to Pay service in other jurisdictions such as Canada.

Sander Meijers, Adyen Country Manager for Canada, said:

“The introduction of Tap to Pay on iPhone in Canada marks a pivotal moment for the customer experience and how they see contactless payments. Adyen is always on top of the emerging trends that allow us to provide the best shopping experience possible, and bringing Tap to Pay on iPhone to our stores in Canada is a great example of that. This new feature boosts transaction convenience for Canadian customers and businesses while upholding Adyen’s performance on all fronts. We are excited to empower Canadian businesses to offer enhanced choice and flexibility to their customers.”

As first reported by Reuters, Milan-based luxury brand Prada will provide it in its shops beginning with Italy’s fashion capital.

Stripe, which currently competes for market share with Fintech Adyen to supply payments services to firms, reveals it was adopting the Apple service.

Ruhi Dang, a product manager for Europe and other markets at Stripe, said:

“Tap to Pay on iPhone means Italian companies can now accept contactless payments with a device a lot of us already carry in our pockets.”
