House Financial Services Committee to Discuss Toxic FDIC Work Environment

Recently, the head of the FDIC was compelled to resign. Following an independent review of the financial regulator’s management, some Democrats called for FDIC Chairman Martin Gruenberg to step down.

Gruenberg decided to part ways with the FDIC when the review shared that between January 2015 and April 2018, approximately 8% of the respondents (191 of 2,376) said they had experienced sexual harassment at the FDIC. The report also claimed that harassment may have been underreported due to fear of retaliation. Gruenberg was said to have a “reputation within the FDIC for a temper.”

The House Financial Services Committee has scheduled a hearing on June 12th starting at 10AM ET, entitled “Oversight of the FDIC’s Failed Leadership and Toxic Workplace Culture.” Chairman of the Committee, Patrick McHenry has been critical of the troublesome reports of disfunction at the FDIC prior to the independent review.

The details of witnesses participating in the Hearing are not yet available. The hearing will be live-streamed to the public.
