SE Asia Personal Finance Firm MoneySmart Rejects MoneyHero’s Acquisition Bid

MoneySmart Group, a personal finance company in Southeast Asia, has rejected MoneyHero Group’s unsolicited, non-binding offer to acquire 100% of its shares.

The offer, which MoneySmart’s board deemed neither serious nor credible, was dismissed unanimously due to its misalignment with the company’s strategic objectives and the lack of prior discussions with MoneySmart’s management before the offer was made public.

The approach by MoneyHero, which included a press release referencing a recent private share transaction, did not inspire confidence among MoneySmart’s leadership, according to the announcement.

The board concluded that the proposed merger would not deliver value to shareholders and would detract from MoneySmart’s long-term strategic goals.

The reference to a private share transaction was particularly noted as not being indicative of MoneySmart’s true market value or future growth potential.

MoneySmart’s decision to reject the offer underscores its commitment to its current strategic path, which has recently brought the company to profitability in a sustainable manner.

In 2023, MoneySmart achieved positive free cash flow, reflecting its strong financial health. The company continues to invest in innovation and the development of its products and services, maintaining its focus on being a trusted partner to its customers and executing its growth strategy.

MoneySmart Group operates two key brands: MoneySmart, a financial marketplace offering consumers a platform to compare and make informed decisions about banking, insurance, and investment products; and Bubblegum, which focuses on creating innovative digital insurance products and experiences.

The group’s mission remains centered on empowering consumers with the clarity, confidence, and control needed to manage their financial futures effectively.

By maintaining its independence and strategic focus, MoneySmart aims to continue pushing the boundaries of financial product innovation and consumer empowerment in Southeast Asia’s rapidly evolving financial landscape.
