As one of many Executive Actions taken by President Donald Trump, the Biden Executive Action pertaining to Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been rescinded.
As posted on the White House website, Executive Order 14110 of October 30, 2023 (Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence) – is no more.
The Order by the Biden Administration was an extensive, prescriptive outline of requirements for the emerging AI industry that was so convoluted it would have certainly inhibited AI development in the US – a tech sector vital to the economy.
Famed venture capitalist Marc Andreessen said that one of the reasons he backed Donald Trump for President was due to the Biden Administration’s approach to AI.
According to TechCrunch, Andreessen met with Biden officials, a meeting he described as “absolutely horrifying.”
Andreessen said he met with radicalized staffers with ideas that would damage Silicon Valley’s ambitions. This included artificial intelligence, which Andreessen believed the government wanted to control, becoming “market makers” deciding which companies would win and which would not. This is not exactly a free market economy strategy but more reflective of authoritarian markets that seek to control industry.
“They actually said flat out to us, ‘don’t do AI startups like, don’t fund AI startups.”
The Biden approach to AI could have very well continued under a Harris Administration. All of this has changed as Trump has indicated he wants the US to lead the AI revolution.
Expectations are for more announcements on AI emerging from the Trump Administration soon.
