motusbank, the digital-only bank launched by Meridian Credit Union in Q2 2019, will shut down by early 2026.
Meridian, which is reportedly Ontario’s largest credit union, and Coast Capital Savings jointly announced that they will absorb motusbank’s accounts and assets, pending regulatory approval.
This closure marks the end of motusbank’s six-year journey as a national online bank, which struggled to achieve the scale needed to compete in Canada’s concentrated banking market.
Motusbank was envisioned as Meridian’s vehicle for expanding beyond Ontario into a national market.
However, despite its strategic objectives, the bank only attracted 16,000 members by 2025.
Competing in Canada’s banking sector without physical branches, a robust digital acquisition strategy, or significant brand recognition proved quite challenging.
The bank faced competition from established digital players like EQ Bank, Tangerine, and Simplii, which appear to benefit from larger marketing budgets, plenty of financial resources, and stronger brand equity.
The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated challenges for smaller financial institutions, but motusbank’s struggles were compounded by internal factors.
A leadership change in January 2022 saw Jay-Ann Gilfoy appointed as President and CEO of both Meridian and motusbank.
Under Gilfoy’s leadership, Meridian shifted its focus toward local growth and cooperative values, prioritizing deeper relationships with existing members over motusbank’s national expansion.
Gilfoy stated,
“We’ve made the decision to sharpen our focus on the growth and success of Meridian.”
Additionally, motusbank’s digital offerings were perceived as lackluster. Reddit users commenting on the closure noted an outdated app, slow innovation, and a lack of aggressive growth.
One user remarked, “Motusbank has been pretty much on life support through the pandemic,” reflecting a sentiment that the bank failed to keep pace with competitors.
For motusbank’s customers, the transition will be relatively seamless but not without inconvenience.
Starting in May 2025, Ontario-based loans, including mortgages and HELOCs, will transfer to Meridian, while deposit accounts and loans outside Ontario will move to Coast Capital Savings.
As clarified in the update, customer funds remain insured, and most will not need to take action as the transition occurs automatically.
However, some customers, like one Reddit user with a GIC maturing in 2027, feel locked in and are skeptical about Coast Capital’s ability to retain them.
The closure underscores broader challenges for digital-only banks in Canada.
Motusbank’s exit highlights that low fees and convenience alone are insufficient without a unique value proposition, strong digital marketing, and significant scale.
Industry observers draw parallels to Robinhood’s wealthtech push, which emphasizes lifestyle finance and innovative offerings to capture market share.
Motusbank’s failure to innovate at a similar pace left it vulnerable in a market dominated by Canada’s Big Five banks (a trend seen in other markets like Australia as well).
Motusbank’s closure serves as a warning or lesson for neo-banks and digital-first challengers.
As one of Canada’s few fully digital banks not owned by a major incumbent, its struggles illustrate the difficulty of competing in a market with limited regulatory support for innovation.
Canada’s delayed open banking framework, now pushed to 2026, and the government’s hesitance to foster competition have created a challenging environment for fintechs.
Without adequate resources, a compelling brand identity / business model, or meaningful innovation, new entrants face a challenging environment.
The quiet exit of motusbank indicates that there are significant barriers to entry in Canada’s banking sector.
For Canadian consumers, the closure potentially means fewer innovative alternatives and possibly higher fees in a market dominated by established players (who obviously have many more resources at their disposal).
For the fintech industry, it’s a reminder that scale, trust, and a robust growth strategy are vital if you want to survive.
