Stripe, Microsoft Partner to Enable AI-Powered Digital Commerce with Copilot Checkout

Stripe has announced a new integration with Microsoft Copilot, enabling seamless shopping experiences directly within chat conversations. Announced this month, this collaboration introduces Copilot Checkout, a feature that allows U.S. users to discover and purchase products from various digital commerce platforms and retailers like Etsy, Urban Outfitters, and Anthropologie without ever leaving the Microsoft Copilot interface.

This move underscores the growing intersection of artificial intelligence and e-commerce, promising to make online buying as effortless as chatting with a friend.

At the core of this integration is the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard co-developed by Stripe.

This protocol facilitates communication between AI agents like Copilot and merchants, ensuring secure and efficient transactions.

When a user expresses interest in shopping during a conversation—say, asking for gift ideas or product recommendations—Copilot Checkout springs into action.

Microsoft communicates with Stripe to populate a native checkout form right in the chat. Stripe then connects with the seller using the protocol, allowing the buyer to input payment details securely.

A key update here is the Shared Payment Token, which Stripe generates after receiving the buyer’s credentials.

This token is passed to the seller, who can process the payment through Stripe or another provider while leveraging Stripe’s advanced fraud protection signals.

Importantly, the seller remains the merchant of record, retaining control over customer data and transaction details.

This setup not only enhances security by avoiding the exposure of sensitive information but also empowers businesses with robust tools to combat fraud in an AI-centric world.

The benefits are said to be multifaceted.

For consumers, it transforms passive discovery into instant action, eliminating the need to switch apps or browsers.

Businesses, on the other hand, gain access to Stripe’s Agentic Commerce Suite, a comprehensive set of tools that make products discoverable to AI agents, streamline checkouts, and handle payments via a single integration.

This infrastructure is crucial as AI reshapes commerce, enabling merchants to tap into new channels without overhauling their systems.

Industry leaders are enthusiastic about the partnership.

Kevin Miller, head of payments at Stripe, remarked,

“AI is changing how commerce works, and as with every technology shift, it needs new infrastructure. Stripe is building that infrastructure, and Microsoft is putting it to use by enabling commerce inside Copilot.”

Nayna Sheth, head of product for agentic payments at Microsoft, stated,

“With Copilot, we want to make discovering and purchasing products as effortless as possible. As we bring new AI-powered experiences to life, we are collaborating with Stripe to provide the reliable and fast-improving infrastructure that makes this new era of AI-powered commerce possible.”

This isn’t Stripe’s first foray into AI commerce; the company previously powered Instant Checkout in ChatGPT and continues to develop solutions for agentic environments.

Microsoft, a Stripe customer since 2022, has utilized Stripe for payments, Connect for marketplace operations, and identity verification.

As we head into the new year, the companies plans to integrate the Agentic Commerce Suite more deeply, accelerating merchant onboarding and expanding the ecosystem.

Currently available to Copilot users in the United States as part of Microsoft 365, this feature marks a pivotal step toward ubiquitous AI commerce.

As adoption grows, it could redefine how we shop, blending conversation with conversion in ways that feel natural and intuitive.

With e-commerce projected to exceed $6 trillion globally by 2026, products like Copilot Checkout position Stripe and Microsoft at the center of this digital transformation movement.
