Banco Santander, Visa Pilot AI-Enabled Agentic Payments across LatAm Markets

Banco Santander (NYSE: SAN) and Visa (NYSE: V) have reportedly achieved a breakthrough in digital commerce, unveiling the region’s inaugural controlled pilot of end-to-end payments executed entirely by artificial intelligence agents. Announced recently this month, the partnership leverages Visa Intelligent Commerce technology to enable secure, consent-based transactions that consumers can delegate to AI systems.

This development signals a major shift toward agentic commerce across Latin America, where AI tools can handle shopping tasks from discovery to final payment while upholding rigorous safety and regulatory standards.

The pilot spanned five key markets—Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Uruguay—marking the first time AI agents successfully completed real-world purchases using Santander-issued credentials.

In Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and Uruguay, the agents bought books, while in Brazil they purchased chocolates.

These transactions served as concrete evidence of improved cross-border functionality and interoperability between merchants, networks, and banking systems.

By operating within Visa’s security infrastructure, the initiative ensured transparent data handling, explicit consumer consent, and full compliance with existing payment regulations and supervisory requirements.

Matías Sánchez, who oversees global cards and digital solutions at Banco Santander, highlighted the significance: the tests prove how AI can power practical, protected shopping experiences that preserve issuer oversight and consumer safeguards.

He described the effort as a crucial advancement in turning AI-assisted retail into everyday reality through secure and interconnected systems.

Catalina Tobar, leading growth products and partnerships for Visa in Latin America and the Caribbean, echoed the enthusiasm.

She noted that the Santander collaboration represents a pivotal moment for the region’s commerce landscape.

Visa Intelligent Commerce lays the groundwork for transactions that are not only protected and effortless but also designed for widespread expansion, preparing banks, merchants, and consumers alike for the next wave of innovation.

The pilot validated essential stages of the customer experience, including secure consent mechanisms, protected credential use, and smooth integration across different platforms.

All activities remained firmly within regulated banking environments, reinforcing that innovation and oversight can coexist effectively.

Recent Visa research underscores the timeliness of this launch, revealing that more than 70 percent of Latin American consumers already incorporate AI into their purchasing routines.

As these behaviors evolve, fully autonomous agentic commerce is expected to move from experimental stages to mainstream adoption throughout 2026.

This evolution promises to transform how individuals explore products, confirm details, and complete buys, offering greater convenience without compromising security.

For Banco Santander and Visa, the milestone goes beyond technology demonstration.

It establishes a scalable model for responsible AI integration in payments, fostering ecosystem-wide readiness.

Industry observers see this as a foundational step that could accelerate similar initiatives globally, positioning Latin America at the forefront of AI-powered financial services. As banks and payment networks continue refining these capabilities, everyday consumers may soon benefit from intelligent agents handling routine transactions with efficiency.
