Coinbase Enables Businesses to Accept Payments from AI Agents

Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN) is expanding its tools for the emerging agentic economy, with a particular focus on allowing businesses to receive payments from autonomous AI systems. In an official update, the company outlined three coordinated releases aimed at businesses, individual users, and developers.Starting this week, Coinbase Business customers can accept USDC payments from AI agents.

The capability runs on Coinbase Payments infrastructure and includes native support for x402, an open payment standard designed for internet-native, pay-per-use transactions.

Businesses do not need to build a separate payment flow. They can accept agent payments, manage and reconcile them, cash out, earn rewards on idle USDC balances, and receive funds without chargeback risk—all within a single account.

Coinbase noted that traditional payment systems were built around the assumption of a human clicking a button.

As agentic traffic grows—recently surpassing human traffic on Base documentation pages—businesses need infrastructure that serves both people and autonomous software.

Coinbase Business is being positioned to support that shift. For individual users,

Coinbase is enhancing Coinbase for Agents, its tool that connects AI agents to Coinbase accounts via MCP and CLI interfaces.

New real-time trading views and conditional commands let users supervise agent activity more closely.

Features include streaming open and active orders, viewing order-book depth, monitoring live price and volume data, and setting conditions that trigger buys, sells, or cancellations.

Users can issue instructions in plain language while keeping control through predefined guardrails.

The same WebSocket data used by institutional desks is now accessible through natural-language interfaces.

Developers receive a new x402 SDK from the Coinbase Developer Platform. It allows builders to add x402 payment acceptance to any API, MCP server, or web service in just three lines of code.

The SDK is production-ready and pre-configured, removing the need for manual middleware setup or deep expertise in the protocol.

It also pairs with managed wallets and policy engines so agents can hold funds and operate under spending controls.Coinbase framed the releases as steps toward a complete financial stack for both humans and agents.

AI systems are already researching, trading, paying, and operating across the internet.

The company argues that these systems require purpose-built rails, accounts, and tools, and that it is assembling those pieces.

The updates reflect Coinbase’s broader view that agents will become primary participants in the digital economy, acting continuously on behalf of users at a scale humans cannot match. By addressing acceptance for businesses, usable controls for people, and easy integration for developers, the company aims to close existing gaps in agentic commerce.
