Announced on July 23, 2026, the innovation—known as Wireless Tamper Detection and covered by US Patent No. 12,664,553—strengthens the company’s extensive intellectual property holdings focused on safeguarding terminal hardware.
The technology targets a persistent vulnerability in unattended payment environments.
Devices such as fuel pumps, self-service checkout stations, and outdoor kiosks handle high volumes of transactions without constant human supervision.
Criminals often exploit this by discreetly attaching or inserting skimming equipment that captures card data during otherwise legitimate payments.
Industry estimates place the annual cost of card skimming to U.S. consumers and financial institutions near $1 billion, with recent data indicating a continued rise in incidents.
Unlike conventional defenses that depend on visible seals, mechanical sensors, or periodic manual inspections—approaches that determined attackers can sometimes circumvent—the patented system takes a different route.
It trains each terminal to establish a baseline of its typical internal radio-signal environment and then continuously monitors for deviations that suggest unauthorized physical changes.
A skimmer placed inside a card reader slot may leave the external appearance, sound, and feel of the device unchanged, yet it alters how radio waves propagate within the enclosure.
The terminal can detect these subtle shifts in real time and respond accordingly.
Because many contemporary payment terminals already incorporate radio functionality, the capability can be activated through software updates alone.
Merchants therefore avoid the expense and disruption of hardware replacements or additional components.
Will Morgan, Verifone’s Chief Information Security Officer, explained the philosophy behind the approach: rather than programming devices to recognize only predefined attack signatures, the system enables them to autonomously notice when their physical surroundings have been altered in unnatural ways.
A radio sensor, he noted, can register changes invisible to a passerby and perform this monitoring without interruption or extra hardware.
The announcement also underscores the dual nature of modern threats, which frequently combine physical tampering with software vulnerabilities.
While Wireless Tamper Detection addresses the hardware layer, Verifone is simultaneously urging merchants to maintain current software versions on their devices.
To support this effort, the company plans to introduce a “Verify Your Verifone Security” initiative during Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October, providing guidance to help businesses of all sizes assess and update their terminal protections.
