Robinhood Secures Regulatory Clearance for Cryptocurrency Services in the UK

Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ: HOOD) has achieved an important regulatory milestone in Britain. Its local subsidiary, Robinhood U.K. Ltd, was added to the Financial Conduct Authority’s register of cryptoasset firms effective 31 July 2026. This registration under the existing anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing rules allows the company to begin offering certain cryptocurrency-related activities in the UK market.

The approval confirms that Robinhood meets the FCA’s current requirements for firms conducting specific cryptoasset business.

Under the present regime, which has operated since 2020, registered entities can facilitate crypto services while complying with money-laundering controls.

More than 50 firms already appear on the register, including established players such as Kraken, Ripple, and larger financial institutions. However, the permissions granted are limited in scope.

Robinhood U.K. Ltd is permitted to arrange cryptocurrency trades—essentially receiving customer orders and transmitting them to other parties for execution.

It does not hold authorisation to operate an exchange itself or to provide custody services by holding clients’ digital assets.

The register also indicates restrictions around holding client money and operating crypto ATMs without separate written consent from the regulator.

These boundaries mean the firm cannot yet offer the full suite of trading and storage features available in other jurisdictions.

Robinhood has long held FCA authorisation as a stockbroker in the UK, dating back to 2019, and launched its brokerage platform for British customers in 2023–2024.

That service focuses primarily on commission-free access to US-listed stocks and ADRs.

Cryptocurrency capabilities represent a newer expansion for the UK entity.

The company has previously indicated intentions to introduce crypto offerings in Britain following its second-quarter results, though no specific launch date or list of supported assets has been publicly detailed at the time of the registration.

The timing of this registration carries added weight because of forthcoming changes to UK crypto regulation.

A more comprehensive authorisation framework is scheduled to take effect in October 2027.

Applications under the new regime are expected to open at the end of September 2026 and close by the end of February 2027.

Firms currently registered under the anti-money laundering rules will still need to seek fresh authorisation; existing registration does not automatically transfer.

Securing a place on the current register may nonetheless provide a preparatory advantage during the transition window.

This development forms part of Robinhood’s broader international growth strategy.

The platform has expanded crypto and related services in the United States and Europe, including acquisitions and new product launches such as tokenised assets and blockchain initiatives.

In the UK, the limited arranging permission positions the firm to prepare offerings while navigating the evolving regulatory landscape.

Investors and customers should note that registration under the money-laundering regime does not equate to the same investor protections available for traditional financial products.

Crypto assets generally fall outside the Financial Services Compensation Scheme and full Financial Ombudsman Service coverage in many cases.

Robinhood has not yet activated crypto trading for UK users, and any future service would operate within the constraints of the current and upcoming rules.

The FCA registration marks a measured step forward for Robinhood in one of Europe’s major financial centres. It enables progress toward crypto services ahead of tighter rules, while highlighting the careful, phased approach required under British oversight. Further details on product rollout will depend on the company’s operational preparations and any additional regulatory steps.
