Google Pay Introduces Gemini enabled AI Tool for Users in India

Google, part of Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG), has introduced a significant enhancement to its popular digital payments platform in India by incorporating advanced artificial intelligence capabilities directly into the Google Pay application. This development, aimed exclusively at consumers based in the country, centers on a new conversational tool designed to assist users in better comprehending and managing their personal finances.

The feature, known as Ask Google Pay, leverages Google’s Gemini models to create an interactive experience within the app.

Users can now engage through natural language queries, either by typing or speaking, to gain insights into their spending habits.

For instance, individuals might inquire about expenditures over a specific period, such as the previous month’s outlays on particular categories like food or shopping.

The system then processes transaction history from the app to deliver categorized breakdowns, identify trends, and highlight potential areas for savings.

Responses often include visual elements like charts to make the information more accessible and easier to interpret.

Beyond basic analysis, the tool extends support for educational content on financial topics.

It can clarify concepts such as systematic investment plans, credit scores, compound interest, and differences between various tax structures.

Personalized recommendations may also appear, including suggestions for suitable credit card options based on observed spending patterns or relevant offers that align with user activity.

Importantly, the assistant is positioned as a source of informational guidance rather than professional financial advice, empowering users to make more informed decisions independently.

Privacy and user control form core elements of the rollout.

Activation requires explicit opt-in through the personalization settings within Google Pay, which remain disabled by default.

All relevant data, including transaction details and any linked credit report information, stays confined to the Google Pay environment.

It is not shared externally or employed to train broader AI models.

Sensitive elements like full account numbers or government-issued identifiers are excluded from processing.

The experience is available without needing any premium Google AI subscription and functions across both Android and iOS versions of the app, with minor variations due to platform-specific permissions.

Language accessibility receives strong emphasis, with support for multiple Indian languages at launch—initially around ten, including options for both text and voice interactions.

This multilingual approach aims to reach a wider audience across the diverse linguistic landscape of India.

The feature is being introduced gradually to a subset of users and will expand further over time.

In parallel with the AI integration, Google has broadened its credit offerings by partnering with SBI Card to introduce the Google Pay Flex SBI Card.

This fully digital product operates on the RuPay network (with additional Visa support noted in some descriptions) and can be applied for seamlessly inside the app.

It includes rewards through a points system redeemable for value, flexible repayment options such as converting balances to EMIs, and certain promotional benefits related to Google products and services.

This combination of AI-driven insights and expanded credit access reflects Google’s strategy to evolve Google Pay beyond simple transactions into a more comprehensive financial management companion for Indian users.

By embedding intelligent tools into an already widely used UPI-based platform, the company seeks to enhance financial literacy and convenience in everyday money matters while prioritizing data security and user choice. As digital payments continue to dominate in India, such innovations could influence how consumers interact with their finances on a daily basis.
