Western Union (NYSE: WU) has rolled out a new product called Stablecard, developed together with the stablecoin infrastructure firm Rain. The offering pairs a digital wallet holding the company’s own dollar-linked token, USDPT, with a Visa secured credit card.
The goal is to let people receive, store, and spend US dollar value more easily across borders.USDPT is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank and operates on the Solana blockchain.
It is fully reserved and can be redeemed one-for-one for US dollars.
Through the Stablecard mobile app, users can accept Western Union transfers straight into a USDPT wallet, keep the balance in digital dollars, move tokens to or from compatible wallets and exchanges, and spend the funds instantly via the linked Visa card.
The card works online, at physical merchants, and at ATMs wherever Visa is accepted.
In supported locations it can also be added to Apple Pay or Google Pay.The service launched on August 4, 2026, in 37 markets.
Western Union plans to reach more than 60 markets by the end of the year. Priority is being given to places where local currencies are volatile and interest in dollar-backed digital assets is already strong.
Recipients who once had to collect cash at a physical agent location can now keep the value in dollars inside the app and spend it directly, while still retaining the option to withdraw cash at a Western Union outlet if they prefer.
Company executives frame the product as a practical step toward broader financial access.
Devin McGranahan, Western Union’s president and CEO, noted that pairing a stable digital dollar with the firm’s global network and Visa’s wide acceptance gives customers a straightforward way to preserve value, transfer money, and spend across borders with greater confidence.
Rain’s CEO and co-founder Farooq Malik emphasized that the infrastructure makes stablecoin benefits available to people who may never have considered on-chain finance, delivering a familiar experience with built-in compliance and safeguards.
Beyond convenience for end users, the model is expected to improve capital efficiency for Western Union itself.
Traditional remittances often require prefunding accounts in destination countries days in advance.
Because USDPT can settle in seconds at any time, the company can move liquidity only when needed rather than holding idle balances around the world.
Funds that remain inside the app also stay within the Western Union ecosystem longer, opening the door to additional digital services over time.
The Stablecard app is available now in the Apple App Store and on Google Play in the initial markets.
Access, features, and fees will vary according to local regulations.
The launch continues Western Union’s broader push to combine its long-standing remittance infrastructure with new digital asset tools, aiming to serve both existing customers who receive money transfers and a wider group seeking simple ways to hold and use dollar value.
