UK’s Digital Bank Monzo Reports 1M+ Business Accounts

UK digital bank Monzo has surpassed one million business accounts, marking a significant milestone for the challenger more than six years after introducing the service. Monzo Business announced the achievement in late July 2026, confirming it now supports over a million UK business customers. This brings the bank’s combined personal and business customer total to more than 16 million.

The business division launched in March 2020 and has roughly doubled its customer numbers in under two years, reflecting strong demand for straightforward digital tools among small and medium-sized enterprises.

The growth positions Monzo as the first fully regulated digital bank in the UK to cross the one million business customer threshold.

It now banks with approximately one in six UK businesses overall and one in five newly established firms.

Coverage extends nationwide, with customers in every one of the UK’s 121 postcode areas.

According to the latest annual Current Account Switch Service data for SME and charity accounts, Monzo Business was the most switched-to provider in the previous year.

The rise coincides with broader shifts in how British businesses manage finances.

Monzo research indicates that 68% of SMEs depend more heavily on digital banking than they did in 2020, while 63% began adopting additional digital tools and services during the pandemic.

Many owners report that running a business feels more complex than it did six years earlier, and a majority seek banking features that go beyond basic account functions to simplify administration.

Customers have put Monzo’s tools to practical use.

Those employing Payment Links typically receive funds 11 days sooner on average.

Business users have automatically reserved nearly £7 billion in Tax Pots to cover future liabilities.

Since launch, they have also deposited more than £4 billion into Instant Access Savings Pots, with nearly £1 billion currently held in these interest-earning accounts to strengthen cash reserves.

Jordan Shwide, General Manager of Monzo Business, described the milestone as evidence of the confidence business owners have shown in the bank.

“When we launched Monzo Business in 2020, our ambition was simple: to build a bank that genuinely made running a business easier,” he said.

The focus has remained on everyday pain points such as faster payments, tax preparation, expense management, and overall financial visibility.

Monzo’s business offering includes a free Lite plan alongside paid Pro and Team options that add invoicing, accounting integrations, multi-user access, expense cards, and bulk payments.

The bank continues to expand product capabilities while preparing for further European growth following its moves into markets such as Ireland.

This expansion underscores the competitive pressure digital players are applying to traditional high-street lenders in the SME space.

By prioritising intuitive apps, automated features, and faster account opening—often completed the same day—Monzo has carved out a substantial share of a market long dominated by larger institutions. The one million mark signals both commercial momentum and a lasting change in how many UK businesses choose to bank.
