IFC Proposes Up To $25m Equity Investment in Jumia Technologies

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is proposing an equity investment of up to $25 million in Jumia Technologies AG, Africa’s leading e-commerce platform and the first African technology company to list on the New York Stock Exchange.

The proposed project aims to accelerate Jumia’s growth across its core markets, according to IFC disclosures seen by CrowdFund Insider.

IFC said its financial additionality centers on providing primary capital to the company as the sole anchor investor in a private placement, supporting platform efficiencies and Jumia’s path to profitability.

The international lender anticipates that the project will preserve and expand access to markets for businesses, a significant share of which are micro, small and medium enterprises, as well as consumers across Jumia’s core African markets.

IFC said the investment is also expected to strengthen the resilience of the e-commerce ecosystem in the region and help sustain the presence of one of Africa’s leading e-commerce platform while demonstrating a commercially viable business model for the sector.

The project is expected to drive improved sales opportunities for merchants and greater product availability for consumers.

IFC also expects it to expand micro-entrepreneurship opportunities for independent workers, including J-Force agents, drivers and pickup point operators, contributing to more inclusive economic participation in markets with high rates of informal employment.

IFC and Jumia are jointly exploring advisory services to increase shareholder engagement, implement environmental and social actions, expand SME training and capacity building, and provide financing opportunities to SMEs on the platform.

IFC said its non-financial additionality will include targeted expertise around strategic initiatives such as vendor financing, warehouse solarization, fleet electrification and broader market enablement programs for women entrepreneurs, J-Force agents and gender vendor education.

The institution will also work with Jumia to implement environmental and social improvements designed to align the company’s operations with IFC’s Performance Standards through a detailed Environmental and Social Action Plan.

The SME financing component is particularly notable because it could extend the impact of the investment beyond Jumia itself, giving merchants on the platform greater access to capital while also supporting the company’s broader marketplace ecosystem.

Jumia is a publicly traded company, with the majority of its shares held by retail investors. Several institutional investors each hold less than 10% of the company’s shares, according to IFC.

The company is led by Chief Executive Officer Francis Dufay and Executive Vice President of Finance and Operations Antoine Maillet-Mezeray, supported by an executive team spanning finance, operations, technology and commercial functions, as well as country CEOs across its key African markets.

For IFC, the proposed investment combines growth capital with support for SME financing, sustainability initiatives, and market access.

If completed, the transaction would give Jumia fresh primary capital as it works toward profitability while supporting a wider network of merchants, consumers, and independent workers across its core African markets.
