AI Adoption : China’s Latest Robot Shipments Put US AI Hardware Competitors on Alert

Chinese manufacturers of humanoid robots have solidified a commanding position in the global market, with shipments in the first half of 2026 underscoring the scale of their lead over American competitors.

Industry data indicates that firms based in China accounted for more than 97 percent of worldwide humanoid robot deliveries during that period, highlighting rapid advances in production capacity and commercialization that are heightening challenges for US players in the emerging field of embodied AI hardware.

Global humanoid robot shipments reached approximately 19,100 units in the first six months of 2026, representing a more than threefold increase from roughly 5,100 units in the same timeframe the previous year.

Projections from the research firm tracking these figures suggest full-year volumes could approach 60,000 units in 2026, potentially scaling to around half a million annually by 2030.

This growth reflects a broader industry transition from experimental and demonstration phases toward practical industrial and commercial deployments, which now make up over 70 percent of shipments—up from about 50 percent a year earlier.

Leading the pack is Shanghai-based Agibot, which delivered around 8,400 units and captured roughly 44 percent of the global market share.

Hangzhou-based Unitree Robotics followed with approximately 5,900 units, or about 31 percent.

Together, these two companies dominated the majority of worldwide output.

Their volumes significantly outpaced those of prominent US firms such as Tesla, Figure AI, and Agility Robotics, which continue to operate at far lower production scales as they work to ramp up manufacturing.

This disparity stems from China’s advantages in manufacturing ecosystems, extensive supply chains, government policy support, and funding that accelerate the move from prototypes to volume production.

Chinese companies benefit from large domestic demand and the ability to drive down costs quickly, enabling faster iteration and market penetration.

Humanoid robots, as physical embodiments of AI systems, generate real-world operational data that further improves models and capabilities, creating a reinforcing cycle of deployment and refinement.

For US AI hardware competitors, the surge in Chinese shipments presents mounting pressure on multiple fronts. American companies lag in mass-production volumes, which limits their ability to gather comparable real-world data at scale and slows cost reductions.

While US firms often emphasize advanced AI software, simulation tools, and high-end computing elements, the hardware volume gap risks ceding ground in the broader race for leadership in physical AI applications, including factory automation, logistics, and service roles.Geopolitical factors add complexity.

In late July 2026, US authorities imposed restrictions on imports of new foreign-made humanoid and quadruped robots, citing national security and cybersecurity concerns related to potential risks to critical infrastructure and AI systems.

Although this measure aims to bolster domestic development and reduce reliance on overseas suppliers, it also removes access to lower-cost platforms that some researchers and developers had used for testing and training.

Analysts note that regulatory uncertainty and shifting trade dynamics could influence future growth trajectories for the industry as a whole.

Despite the current volume lead held by Chinese producers, the sector remains nascent.

Many robots are still limited in unstructured environments, battery life, and overall productivity compared to human workers.

US companies are advancing their own production lines and focusing on specialized capabilities.

However, the latest shipment figures illustrate how China’s early momentum in scaling hardware is amplifying competitive intensity for American rivals seeking to establish a stronger foothold in this strategically important technology domain.
