AI Startup Etched Takes Just One Month to Double in Valuation

Etched, an artificial intelligence (AI) firm that designs chips, racks, software, and manufacturing methods that aim to provide best-in-class throughput, latency, cost, and power efficiency, reported yesterday that it had raised $700 million at a valuation of $21 billion. The funding round was led by financial trading firm Jane Street. Other investors included Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Peter Thiel, Tiger Global, Bain Capital Ventures, Neo, Stripes, Primary, Positive Sum, Diffusion, Argo, and Blackstone.

On July 23rd, Etched raised $300 million at a $10.3 billion valuation. This funding round was led by Sequoia Capital, with other prominent investors joining, like Andreessen Horowitz, Jane Street, Diffusion, Argo, and SK Hynix.

Etched dramatically doubled its valuation in about four weeks. The rapid jump in valuation reflects the booming AI sector, with some calling it a bubble and others believing we are just getting started.

At the time of the first round, Etched reported that it had begun fabricating hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of inference clusters.

“We’ve built a new 10-Megawatt lab fifteen minutes from our office to enable continuous deployment of our first-gen hardware and rapid prototyping of future generations.”

The quick turnaround in funding can only be explained by Etched executing effectively and rapidly, and investors believing they got a bargain the first time, and so they are inclined to double down.

Etched wants to challenge sector leader NVIDIA and others in the red-hot AI chip sector. As hyperscalers consume chip capacity, optimists predict continued AI growth.

Etched’s success is not guaranteed, as NVIDIA and others are very aware of the growing number of challengers. And scaling needs factories, power, logistics, etc. All of this requires more money.
